She's a good girl with the whole world at her feet.
He's a bad boy with his foot on the world.

As the youngest leading ballerina in my academy, my days are set. Routine. No time for boys. Unfortunately, my mind didn't get the memo, because there is always one name playing on my lips. . . Max Butcher.
The notorious bad boy of The District.
Hot to the point of physical discomfort.
Dangerous. . .

So when he notices me, I struggle to stay en pointe.
But he finds me infuriating. A silly little girl. He wants to keep me out of his business and away from him and other men. He wants to protect my body - protect my innocence.
But not even Max Butcher can stick to his guns.
And the further into his world I'm led, the more danger gathers.

Our Thing can be read without book one and has a happily for now with part two live. Part two has a happily ever after. This book features a powerful and moody hero and an endearing and determined heroine. Both main characters are possessive and fight for each other. It is a love story first. Word steam second. Violence and drama third. Enjoy.

Idk I physically couldn't read anymore- the writing really wasn't for me, (nor was the dialogue or characters) 🤷‍♀️.

I'm sorry but I couldn't - aka ✨my breaking point✨ -:

the heroine is a virgin and was making out with this one guy (because she wants to)- the hero sees this and proceeds to split them apart and beat the guy up- he doesn't think the other guy is good enough for her and says that the heroine is asking for it and pins her arms and unbuttons his jeans to 'get it over with'- the heroine starts crying and tells him to stop, so he pulls her into his truck to drive to her house - where she proceeds to want 'his forgiveness'- I'm sorry what?

For me it wasn't even about what happened, but was about how annoying as shit the characters were 😭- or to put it more ✨eloquently✨: was about how unbelievably immature the characters were barely that far into the story- and how unlikeable they became because of it? I can't get over the fact that she wanted him to forgive her 🧍‍♀️.

The lack of self respect was shocking, and he wasn't even hot 😭?

So yeah- not for me 🤩.

Our Thing was not what I was expecting at all. For starters the whole story is ridiculous. Max plays Rugby in College and is supposedly a bad boy mafia guy. Cassidy is definitely a silly little girl who has a major crush on Max and is willing to just be another bed partner and is also willing to except whatever scraps he decides to give her. Cassidy is only 18 and has parents that she lives with but the mother isn't even part of the story and the father seems to fade away when Max decides Cassidy is going to stay at his family's house and in his bed. Hello where are all the adults? Konnor's story is in book 1 which I didn't read but the family doesn't seem to know anything about the girlfriend which I found weird. Overall this book was not for me and I don't plan to continue with this series.

I have been in the deepest reading rut and Our Thing by Nicci Harris completely fixed me!! I absolutely adore ballerina/mafia hero books. I consume them from the very first page and Our Thing was just perfect to dive into. Max and Cassidy were fantastic!! She was innocent and sassy and he was a dark and absolutely delicious. I loved them so so much!

Gah! Who knew I would fall in love with the Butcher boys the minute I read this. Max was an absolute alpha -dangerous and possessive but Cassidy dished it back to him and then some. Their chemistry was perfection and I loved seeing Max and his dominance fall at the feet of the ballerina he didn't see coming. If there was one drawback to the story at all I would add that Cassidy's inner monologue seemed somewhat immature. Seeing the exclamation marks to emphasize her thoughts definitely took me out of the story and made her seem very young at times. Granted, she just turned eighteen, but it done enough where it was noticeable and distracting.

Overall, this book was amazing and I can't wait to dive into book two. 4 stars! ~Ratula

the book is about dense Cassidy who has a major crush on Max Butcher and convinces herself that a sexual relationship would be enough for her. only sexual. nothing more. but OFC she can’t stick to the rules and her crush turns into love only a few chapters after.

Max supposed to be a bad mafia boy kind of type but acts like every damn playful college quarterback type.

but he ain’t the main problem here. ITS HER THIS BITCH

HOW? JUST HOW CAN YOU BE SO RIDICULOUSLY STUPID? ik your eighteen but it was getting out of hand. she played the 'very shy but also very brave with smart comebacks' in the most desperate way. i’ve got secondhand embarrassment every goddamn time she dared to open her mouth. every. damn. chapter. she annoyed the fuck out of me. and she literally made ballet her whole fckn personality.

i found this book through instagram. the authors reel showed up while i was scrolling and istg every one of her books sounded like a BANGER. every reel. every book. ofc i was like jackpot. that’s gonna be my next read. and at first i liked it. somehow.

after the first chapter it was clear that it’s one of these trashy wattpad romances but i was totally in for it even tho the writing was terrible. but every single time i thought it can’t be worse nicci harris proved me wrong.

a waste of time truly.

I wrote Cassidy's and Max's story three times! Max kept evolving and so I needed to step up to the plate for him - he's a big character with lots of depth. I'll be honest - and I'm a little embarrassed to admit this - but I totally fantasise about him. . . My own character. . . Who I created. . . What does that say about me? Lol! I don't really care, he's crazy hot. Alpha male on point: jealous, protective, powerful, smart, cocky, and deep, with a single-minded interest in the heroine. NOT an instalove situation from his part, not at all. But she'll get under his skin, soften him, and he'll never be the same man again.

Conflicted A Bit

I liked the story. The sexy parts were steamy. The brothers were alpha enough, but....
I just couldn't identify with the female lead.

This one had the slight edge for me on the previous book in the series and this one unlike the first is definitely set firmly in the criminal underbelly. This is Cassidy Slater and Max Butchers story Cassidy is the baby Sister of Konnor and Max is a key player in the district.

A talented ballerina Cassidy lives and breathes for her art it’s been the sole focus in her life until now that is when a certain handsome butcher boy one with a delicious filthy mouth starts to take precedence. Right from the onset, she’s hooked despite knowing that for Max this is little more than sex. Until it isn’t and Max finds himself throwing out his entire rule book when it comes to one certain alluring dancer.

These two fall fast and hard with so much intensity between them. Cassidy now finding herself in the thick of a reality she has little previous experience of. But what she does know is that she wants Max and so will accept whatever she must if it means having him in her life. But With new horizons also comes danger as old enemies position Cassidy in their sights shes basically collateral damage for someone’s else’s revenge.

I enjoyed this one a lot it managed to easily pull me into the narrative and these two have so much chemistry together it finishes on a HFN so no cliffhanger and I’m definitely ready for more Cassidy and Max in the next book which I’m looking forward to starting.

Oh. My. Max. 🥵🔥♥️ I loved Blesk & Konnor in the first book of this series & was excited to continue on with the story. This story follows Cassidy Slater (Konner’s younger sister) & Max Butcher. This is a story of opposites attracting. Cassidy is a young, naive ballerina & Max is a hardened bad boy living his life “in” the family business. Max tries to stay away from Cassidy, but neither one can fight the pull. The chemistry between these two is HOT 🔥
I struggled putting this book down. The more I got to know these main characters, the more I fell in love with them. Cassidy’s quirky humor and Max’s no bullshit attitude made for some interesting banter. In this book we learn more about The District & get a better glimpse at the realities of how different these two characters world’s truly are. The lines of good vs bad are blurred in this story. Sometimes good people do bad things for the right reasons. This book is very much centered on family & Ive enjoyed getting to know the supporting characters better. If you are triggered by rape, anger issues, violence or abuse then do not read this book.

I don’t mind a ridiculously over-the-top pulp fiction, but I just couldn’t get over the fact that the heroine, an 18 year old Pollyanna who grew up coddled by her loving family, who is a professional ballet dancer, and who says “frick” instead of “fuck,” all of a sudden is capable of stabbing and shooting her would-be rapist then go on her merry way, still saying “frick” this and “frick that.” Too funny.

"Never tell me not to touch you again. I fucking hated that."

This was so good. I love that it was different; the characters weren't your cliche mafia bad boy and good girl.
It was real and realistic, even if it was still a mafia romance.

Max, from the beginning, was an asshole, he knows he's an asshole, but he tries to be the person he knows he wants to be for Cassidy in their own way.
People from the outside who don't know them would have seen them as a toxic couple, but Cassidy and Max know each other best and what they want from each other so that other people's opinions don't matter.

There was a bit of involvement of other side characters here and there, which added to the tension of the world. The focus of the plotline heavily falls on romance; there was little exploration and explanation of the world which I am curious about and hope we get to see more of that in the second book.

The book ends on such a tension, sad cliffhanger. I cannot wait to see what's going to happen next.

"My body trembles, and I am a silly little girl because I'd thought love would be warmth in my chest and heart, and peace and contentment in my soul. But it's not contentment. It's not peaceful. It's terrifying. It's so strong that I know it could undo me. It could unravel everything that I am, strip me back until I'm nothing but bare bones and a swollen heart."

The Ballerina and The Gangster.

This got so freaking good in like the last 40%!

The beginning I was enjoying myself too but I tend to not like the whole big secret thing as far as the mafia mmc go. But I kept going because A) The side characters are amazing & B) it’s written as a duet so I was more lenient.

I don’t really know how to describe it… like yes you’re saying you’re big and bad but I need you to show me….

And Max Butcher did. He reaaaalllly did! Sure it took towards the end but the ball didn’t stop rolling after that point and it was un-put-a-downable.

Side note: Cassidy is a dork & I love her. Toni is hilarious and I wish I had a best friend like that.

"Our Thing" is the story of Cassidy and Max.

She is the innocent ballerina.
He is the notorious bad boy.
She has always fantasized about him.
He does not know she exists.

When they meet, sparks fly and their lives get intertwined. But as he drags her into his dark world, will their newfound relationship survive?

This kept me engaged even though the story was average. The heroine was a wee bit too trusting and insecure, and the hero was distant.

Ends on a cliffhanger.

Safe..ish

What can I say about Max… he might be OTT and insensitive at times, but I loved how Cassidy broke through his defenses and touched him. I love when an author gives us character development and, in this case, both characters were change for the better by being with each other.

This is part one of a completed duet, but it does not end in a cliffhanger. I appreciated this because sometimes the heroine in danger cliffhanger can be overdone.

I give it 5 enthusiastic starts and I’m diving right into book 2.

Review for the duet (#1 & #2).

Max
• aka Menace
• 24
• Bad Boy of District
• Gangster

Cassidy
• aka little one
• 18
• Golden Girl of District
• Ballerina

Look, everyone knows I don't do New Adults. What I mean is characters under 27 y/o, huge drama without events, light intensity of intimacy (why the fuck im being decent). Also don't do "adult" books with light intensity which you pp should call that NA too. Also it make my laugh when I read "dark" romance with teenagers.

This duet is a damn good adult romance with damn good any kind of intimacy between young lovers.
They are young, beautiful and in love (in husky old man voice).

He is a manwhore and don't want commitment, she is virgin and already in love.
They agree to no relationship.
But he falls and falls hard.
The good thing is sure he's a bad boy and avoids affection at first, but he is not a jerk either.

Delicious. Delicious. Delicious.

I don't do NAs however I fucking love reading young lovers who can be reckless, silly, and mature at the same time. Or how he becomes more and more possessive, how she stands her ground for all Butchers...

The story is not dark but not a sugar cake either. IMO it was handled well, I liked the trauma of her abuse, the way he treat and take care of her...
You know, a handsome huge gangster is considerate and patient more than you and same time dying from his longing for you and same time boiling for revenge for who did this to you.

Could be shorter yet it didn't bother me much cuz' it was more of romance not the mafia thing. I didn't like cliffhanger at the end, if so it should be told, like

I need more dad-daugther scene, I need it

yea no. fuck no. didn’t finish. i didn’t want a slow burn but this was like so fast. and her first time was so anticlimactic. like the way he was talking about the cop and about other guys and about how they would make it casual and how it can be painful and NOT letting her have sex on her own terms but then giving her literally the blandest first time I’ve ever read. and the mc? pathetic. she literally has NO backbone, and I don’t even have a lot of backbone but this was just RIDICULOUS. she couldn’t even resist ONE day in the fucking resort (where he had no intentions to get on her good side) before jumping back into this toxic douche with no personality other than wanting to “protect her innocence”. fuck off. hated max, hated cassidy. i think I only liked toni and flick.

I think I'm going to need a break after this book. A break, a drink, and a cold shower. I absolutely LOVED Max and Cassidy's story. It was steamy, it tugged at your heartstrings, and the pacing was excellent. I couldn't put it down. I don't read a lot of mafia romance, but I feel like this was mafia romance even for those who don't like the theme. It was very well done, not overwhelming, while still adding to the plot. I've already downloaded book three so I can start that because I can't survive without knowing what's going to happen.

Max Butcher is all things dangerous and delicious served up on a platter.

Cassidy and Max are two polar opposites and there's nothing I love more than a corruptible story.

The cliffhanger- I need more Max and Cassidy. Nicci has woven this story incredibly with each piece strategically placed, interlinking a series of events in a way that plans out beautifully.

Nicci Harris has created something powerfully dark and mesmerizing within the district that is equal parts exciting and disturbing. She shines in crafting novels that toe the line between dark and dangerous, and sweet and sexy, which culminates into a deliciously sinful story of passion, truth, and acceptance.

If you are anything like me and you fell in love with the Kids of the District in Book # 1- Facing Us, then you'll know that the expectations were pretty high for the sequel. Having gone through the myriad of emotions at the complexity of "Facing Us", I wasn't sure how Nicci Harris would top that but, I was pleasantly surprised to note how different, yet alike the two books were. "Our Thing" was quite a turn from the darkness of "Facing Us" but kept the signature 'contemporary romance' vibe which was enjoyable.

The characters in "Our Thing" are charismatic with bold personalities that tug at your heartstrings. I quite enjoyed the contrast between Cassidy, the district's sweetheart, and the total alpha male vibe from the district's most notorious bad boy Max Butcher. "Our Thing" is good girl meets bad boy, District style and I loved every minute of it.

The story-building and writing is sharp with just the right amount of humor to balance out the dastardly setting that is the district. As with her previous book, Nicci Harris focuses strongly on the theme of family. Her depiction of the mafia and the commitments and struggles of those "in" the lifestyle are raw and honest.

Only Nicci Harris could have me rolling in tears from laughter one minute and then pulling my hair out the next. "Our Thing" went from zero to call the fire brigade hot, insanely fast and I loved all the twists and turns and surprises. The premise of one simple act causing a chain reaction of chaos was sheer brilliance.

Nicci Harris has written another winner within the series and I am excited to see what's in store for the "Kids of the District."

I would recommend this series for those who enjoy dark, contemporary romance with a twist.

Cassidy is your typical golden girl - a ballerina who has only had eyes for dance her entire life.

Until, that is, Max Butcher waltzes into her life.

Max is the until alpha-hole - tall, dark, and hot as hell. He and his brothers are known as bad news around town, but when Cassidy catches Max’s attention, it’s all she can do to remain en pointe. As for Max, well, he makes no secret about the fact that he doesn’t do monogamy. But the more he sees (or even thinks about) Cassidy with anyone else, the more Max starts re-evaluating his priorities.

I have never read this author before, but I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of Cassidy and Max. Cassidy was sweet and ditzy and completely naive about … well, about everything. Max was the complete opposite - experienced far beyond his years in life and lust.

I also want to mention I really enjoyed the balletic details scattered throughout. It’s clear Nicci Harris is either a former dancer, or she just really put a lot of time into her research. Either way, brava!

I will point out that I thought the beginning dragged a bit. There is no insta-love here, but I did think the exposition lasted too long before Cassidy and Max got together. There were also quite a few characters to keep track of - tons of brothers, friends, etc. I also would have liked more physical description of the characters. To me, there just wasn't enough, and I had a hard time visualizing any of them.

Overall, however, this was a good, dark mafia romance novel.

DNF at 13%.

GBF tropes galore. I hate the GBF trope.
They say the phrase "asexual pigeon" approximately 728826628892 times. I think the author thinks she found a gold mine of FUNNY with that stupid phrase.

The dialogue is atrocious.

The chemistry is non-existent. The connection came out of nowhere.

The heroine's personality is as interesting as plain bread.

All of her friends are annoying, including the GBF.

I literally couldn’t put this book down.

5 amazing stars

This is a total opposites attract love story. Max is the ultimate bad boy and Cassidy is the good girl ballerina. But when it comes to Max she can’t help but want him. That want turns into need for not just her but for him as well. The need Max has for Cassidy is unexpected by everyone around them. Surprisingly this book it’s too high angst when it come to their relationship. The rest of their story is another story. There is just as much people against them then there is for their new love. And they will have to figure out how to blend both of their worlds together. This book ends in a HFN and it’s seems like we will be getting more from Max and Cassidy in the future! And I can not wait! Loved this book and even though it’s a big longer then I usually read I found myself sad that it was over.

Undeniably "Their Thing" 😊

She laughs a little. "But do you trust him?"

"I have to. I've decided I'd rather risk heartbreak than regret."

I luv Flick and Toni.

My least favorite was Max. He's not likeable for a lot of reasons. But, mostly it's because as u read further u begin to want Cassidy as much as he does and in the process u hate him 'cause, like, every other character in the book . U think he's just not right for Cassidy.

Fuck!

Spoiler alert: he is. Well, as far as perfect couples go.

I'm not going to write a long long review 'cause I might spoil it for you. Overall? I loved iiiiit. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 4*

Where did the one star go? I find, Cassidy's use of the word, "oh my gawd" a lot to b a tad disturbing. If only she wasn't excited about a lot of things like that.

But, that's just me. And that's just, Cassidy.
